What is the point of OnStar?

It would’ve made sense when it released in 1996, but after about 2007 (smartphones) MAYBE 2012 at the latest (4G becoming a thing and there’s no longer you having to wait 800 million years for the map to load), but now it just seems like a waste of money in the modern age of smartphones and map apps.
