Struggling mentally, physically and financially job hunting in London
I need realistic career advice from people in the UK tech market because I’m feeling completely stuck right now.
I worked at a MNC in India for 3 years and 4 months developing and supporting ASP.NET web applications. Then I came to Imperial College London for a master’s in Data Science and Machine Learning (Environment and Sustainability).
Long term, I want to work in sustainability or climate tech using AI/data science. But I’ve been job hunting in London for around 10 months now and things have become really difficult mentally, financially, and physically.
I’m doing part-time jobs to survive in London and repay loans eventually, but the work is physically exhausting. By the time I get home, I’m tired and still trying to apply, prepare, study, and interview. I also don’t get enough time or energy to apply consistently because of this cycle.
I do get interviews sometimes and I’ve reached final rounds a few times too. But I struggle in live coding interviews because I’ve become rusty after relying too heavily on AI tools over the last few years.
I also feel stuck between profiles. I have software engineering experience, but not industry data science experience yet. My master’s thesis/project was also more software-development focused in Python.
At this point I genuinely don’t know what direction makes sense anymore.
Should I focus on:
- software engineering again,
- data analyst or analytics engineer roles,
- junior data engineering,
- climate tech startups,
- or just take any technical role first and pivot later?
I’d really appreciate practical advice from people who’ve gone through something similar in the UK market.
