I stopped trying to become “productive” as it always backfired. This time I just tried to stop scrolling for one hour and surprisingly it's working.

Tips & Tricks

So, I did this little experiment just out of curiosity to see how it goes, as nothing worked in reducing my doomscrolling. Because I kept scrolling without limits every night I’d tell myself things like: “tomorrow I’m going to study properly” “tomorrow I’ll finally lock in” “tomorrow I’ll fix my routine”

Tomorrow always came and so did the time for me to walk the talk. But, somehow I’d still spend half the day scrolling and during the same night while scrolling, again wondering where the time went. And honestly I think part of the reason it kept happening is because my goals were too big, too abstract and absolutely unrealistic. I told myself, “ You need to Be productive” but it meant nothing to my brain, it was a vague statement. It just turned into pressure and guilt.

But when I said to myself “don’t scroll for one hour” it felt weirdly specific and simple. So I decided to give it a go. Phone on the other side of the room. One hour. That’s it. The first thing I noticed is that my brain did NOT like the silence at all. I kept reaching for my phone without thinking. Like actual reflexes. At one point I unlocked my phone, stared at the home screen for a few seconds, then realized I didn’t even know why I picked it up.

That honestly creeped me out a little. And then came this weird restless feeling. Like my brain kept asking: “okay but what now?” “what are we supposed to do?” “this is boring”

Which made me realize something uncomfortable. I think scrolling stopped being entertainment a long time ago. It became a way to avoid empty space. The second my brain isn’t stimulated, it starts panicking a little. So instead of sitting with boredom, uncertainty, thoughts, stress, whatever… I immediately consume something.

Video. Post. Comment. Refresh. Repeat.

So instead of trying to “replace scrolling with productivity,” I started trying something else and that's to take a pause before stimulation. That became the framework.

Not: “force yourself to work hard”

Just: “interrupt the automatic scroll.”

Even 5 minutes helps.

And once I stopped scrolling, I noticed I naturally started doing random normal human things again. Cleaning part of my room. Making food slowly instead of while watching videos. Sitting outside for a bit. Thinking. Sometimes doing actual work without forcing it.

Not because I suddenly became disciplined. Just because my brain finally had room to settle down. I honestly think a lot of us aren’t addicted to scrolling anymore. We’re addicted to never being alone with our own minds for even a few minutes. What do you guys usually do when you’re not scrolling? Because I’m realizing I genuinely forgot how to just… exist a little.
