Shoes -- can I really wear my Altras?

I really want to do the TMB with my Lone Peak 9s. I hike all over New England USA with them. But the tour company is suggesting I wear true hiking boots. For people who have hiked the TMB in late June, can I follow my instinct to just wear trail shoes?
