Instagram DMs are no longer end-to-end encrypted… and people are just casually accepting this?
That basically means your private messages are no longer only between you and the person you’re talking to. Meta can potentially access message content, scan it, analyze it for moderation/AI stuff, and hand it over if legally requested.
People hear “VPN” and think it fixes everything, it doesn’t. A VPN hides your connection, but once your messages hit Instagram’s servers, they’re readable there if E2EE is gone.
So now private convos are less private, sensitive info in DMs is a terrible idea, and users lose one of the few basic privacy protections modern messaging apps should have by default
Meanwhile apps like Signal and WhatsApp still manage to keep E2EE on by default without the world ending.
Kinda wild that in 2026 we’re moving backwards on privacy while every company keeps screaming about “security” and “trust.”
Stay Safe
