A digital nomad looking to provide value to others in the same space

Opinions and Discussions

Hey guys,

I've been travelling solo extensively for the last 5 years. And the last 3 years of it, on a motorcycle. I work as a remote Software engineer which enables me to do this.

So I've been thinking about this after a couple of frustrating workation stay experiences recently.

Why is it still weirdly difficult to figure out whether a place is actually good for remote work before booking it?

Every listing says things like 'great WiFi' or 'perfect for backpackers' but half the time you arrive and the internet is unstable, there’s no proper workspace, the place is noisy all day, or parking turns out to be roadside instead of covered/secure. Sometimes a stay could be great looking at the google reviews, but then probably a recent management change has caused things to go downhill. This happened to me as I missed this while looking up the place online. Coupe of folks had left some comments saying that, you can expect "powercuts" in the month of July, and the stay has no backup power option. I feel like this missed review from a year ago was very crucial for me in deciding whether to book this or not.

One more example that I can think of is: you'd be staying at a hostel or an accomodation. You'd have read reviews saying the place has wifi, but you get there and you realise that your cottage/room is on the far end and you don't get any connectivity. It honestly isn't a big deal for many people, but I feel like these things are a good to have information for a person who has like an important call to attend from the only quiet place available which is their own dorm.

I’ve noticed I spend an unreasonable amount of time digging through reviews trying to piece together whether a place is genuinely work-friendly. Usually I’m searching for random mentions about Zoom calls, internet speed, power backup, a desk availability, parking, nearby cafes, stuff like that.

Made me wonder if other people here do the same thing, or if I’m just optimizing too much.

Would something focused specifically on “workation friendly stays” actually be useful? I’m imagining a map-based app that pulls together accommodations and summarises reviews into things like WiFi reliability, work setup quality, noise levels, parking confidence, etc. Maybe even a workation score based on what remote workers actually care about.

Or do most people already solve this easily with Google reviews?

I am a software tinkerer by nature, this is a small idea that has been there in the back of my mind for some time. I'm posting here to get some feedback or some validation as to whether this is a real issue or not. I'd anyways be building something around this cause its fun. Just wanted to know if it can provide any value to others as well.

If yes, I can factor in your opinions around this whilst I build this. Feel free to leave those irks like the one I've mentioned about the far end room's wifi connection etc. I am thinking that instead of capturing general reviews, such niche details can also be captured. (Maybe collect basic details from the user .. like room details etc and factor it into the workation score that I mentioned)
