Looking for teaching advice

Hi all,

I teach a college professionalization course, and one of the things I teach is resume writing and cover letters. The course is for students of all disciplines/majors who are in a specific program related to law/social sciences, so I have them create generic resumes that would be appropriate for most professional roles.

As professional, what’re the top things you love to see in a resume (or top things you hate to see)? Best tips and tricks? Any great examples you’d be willing to share would be amazing as well!

Some specific insight I’d love: chronological versus reverse chronological order for experiences, ideal margin sizes, one page length (for college students I feel like this is a relatively fine hard and fast rule but I’ve gotten pushback from students who think they have more to include), past tense for past experiences and present tense for present experiences, colors — yay or nay, and full addresses versus zip codes in a header.

Thank you!
