Would you leave a chill remote job for significantly more pay but higher stress?
Hi all,
I’m currently working a pretty chill remote job with occasional travel. Compensation is around ~$90k total annually between base, bonus, and OT from travel. The job gets stressful during travel periods, but outside of that I have a lot of autonomy, great coworkers, and honestly a pretty solid work-life balance. I recently got promoted, but the compensation growth has still felt a bit limited for the Bay Area. The company is not HQ'ed in the US so they don't account for geographic zone.
I’ve been interviewing and received an offer that would be a very significant pay increase (~$135k base + bonus/equity). The role is hybrid but only 1 day/week in office, which is manageable. I'd prefer this over weeks of travel.
My hesitation is more about lifestyle than compensation. The new role sounds much more ambiguous and high pressure. The company is building out a newer business motion and hiring aggressively, so it feels a bit more like joining a scaling team/startup environment inside a larger company. It would definitely accelerate my growth and give me stronger experience in my field, but I’m worried about the tradeoff in stress and work-life balance.
At my current job, I have time for hobbies, upskilling, relationships, etc. I genuinely like my manager and coworkers, and there’s value in that stability. But at the same time, I worry about getting too comfortable and underpaid.
For people who’ve made a jump like this, did you regret leaving the “chill” job? Or was the growth/pay worth it?
