Recommendations for a versatile, affordable zoom lens for an X-T30 II? (Transitioning from primes)
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for some recommendations on a good, affordable zoom lens for my X-T30 II.
For some backstory: I’ve been shooting primes exclusively since 2015. I used to be one of those f/1.8-f/2 Sony portrait and boudoir photographers, but my comfort zone has shifted towards f/5.6-f/11 as I’ve been focusing heavily on street and travel photography.
My current setup is all Fuji primes: 23mm f/2, 27mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2, and 50mm f/2.
As much as I love these lenses for their sharpness, low-light performance, and compact size, I constantly find myself playing the lens swap game. It hurts my shooting flow to the point where I started going out with a single lens just so I wouldn't have an excuse to swap.
This gets especially annoying for travel. I either bring the whole kit, or I limit myself to two lenses and inevitably run into scenes where I need a wider focal length or something right in between. With upcoming trips to places like Tokyo and Seoul, I need a more practical solution, which has me curious about zooms again (back in my Canon days, I ran a 70-200 and a 28-105).
My plan right now is to trade in three of those four lenses—keeping just the 27mm pancake as my only prime—and pick up a solid zoom. I'll likely buy used through KEH or MPB unless anyone has better vendor recommendations.
Thanks in advance for the help. If you want to see what and how I shoot to recommend a fitting focal range, you can check out my Instagram at fkimphoto.
