Ford Escape reliability trends over the years

I'm shopping for a used Escape, likely a 2023 or later hybrid.

To get a broader understanding of which model years and engines have been the most problematic, I pointed AI at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration customer complaint database, a popular Escape forum, a few aggregation sites and this subreddit.

It did a decent job of bucketing the problems helping provide a fuller picture of the real risk a given model year and powertrain poses to buyers than the one-owners-view and the me-toos that these individual sources provide, especially when you compare the number of complaints vs. number sold.

Far from perfect, has been helpful to me. Thought it might be to others as well.

2020–2026

  • Fuel injector cracks are the dominant issue for 2020–2022 1.5L turbo Escapes.
  • Infotainment and rearview camera complaints rose sharply in 2020–2022 vehicles.
  • A significant number of complaints involve recall logistics rather than actual failures, particularly waiting for parts or software remedies, this is common across all manufacturers and a function of the speed of recall notifications vs. resolution.
  • Ecoboost owners are roughly 3-4 times more likely to experience transmission problems over hybrids. The data suggests PHEV are only slightly less reliable than hybrids.

2013–2019

  • Coolant intrusion and cracked engine block failures dominate discussion of this generation, especially with the 1.5L and 1.6L EcoBoost engines. (reddit.com)
  • Reports transmission failures or harsh shifting around 70k–120k miles.
  • 2013–2014 models generated relatively high complaint volumes overall. (autofiles.com)
  • Complaints involving parts availability, particularly on the door latch, dealer scheduling, or repeat repairs surged.
  • Owner sentiment for this generation is sharply polarized: some vehicles reach high mileage trouble-free, while others require engines or transmissions before 100k miles.

2008–2012

  • Electric power steering failure complaints continued to trend , especially 2008–2011. (fordproblems.com)
  • ABS tone ring failures and wheel speed sensor problems were widely discussed in owner forums.
  • Hybrids were generally considered more durable than gas models mechanically, but steering electronics remained problematic.
  • Rust complaints dropped somewhat relative to the first generation but remained most common in snow-belt states.

2001–2007

  • The most reported problems among earliest Escapes were with automatic transmission failures and rust issues in northern climates.
  • Hybrid models introduced in 2006 added regenerative brake complaints and electric power steering failures and brake system warnings. (fordproblems.com)
  • Community discussions generally consider well-maintained 2005–2007 hybrids durable mechanically outside steering and rust concerns. (reddit.com)

Takeaways (after normalization with sales figures)

  • The 2013–2019 EcoBoost generation remains the clear reliability outlier, even after adjusting for sales volume.
  • 2008–2012 vehicles show elevated normalized failure rates primarily due to electric power steering defects.
  • The most recent generation of hybrids and PHEVs show the lowest problem rates per capital.
  • Consistently, across all generations, Ecoboost and transmission variants, significant problems are most likely to occur between 100k-150k miles in gas powertrains and after 200k miles in hybrids and PHEV. Transmissions are the first to go in both, but transmission failure in both flavors of hybrids area so infrequent that there isn't a clear trend on when they fail.
