3D Printer Shopping

My son and I are wanting to get started with 3D printing, but we really don't know where to start. I've read reddit posts, Facebook groups, etc, but the terminology in a lot of instances is over my head.

I'm not interested in a good 'starter' printer that I'll want to upgrade later.

One thing I'm interested in trying is a collaboration with an artist buddy of mine making custom figurines of athletes. I'd print 4-6" (not sure what size yet) figurines in a monocolor that he would hand paint. For that, I'd want an end product that has great detail so it looks as close to the actual person as possible and not some Chinese factory molded thing you get at Target. The speed of printing wouldn't need to be a huge factor.

We would also use it for who knows what else. Replacement parts for something, toys, fidgets, etc.

Any guidance would be appreciated!
