Experimental Bite Force Scaling

Scientific basis

Experimental studies on Salvator merianae show:

strong correlation between SVL/head dimensions and bite force , bite-force values reaching several hundred Newtons experimentally

relatively low cranial strain under simulated bite loads

The skull-strain study comparing:

*Salvator merianae* and *Varanus niloticus* suggests the tegu skull is highly resistant to compressive loading.

# 1- Conservative Maximum Bite Estimative

Observed strain values:

≈ 1000 - 1500

Typical cortical bone failure:

≈ 7000 - 12000

Safety factor estimate:

SF = 7000/1500 = 4.67

Because biological systems do not safely operate near failure limits, only \~25–35% of that reserve should realistically be usable dynamically.

Maximum: 1200 Newtons

# 2- Static Bite Energy

Using: *E = F • D*

*(F = BITE FORCE , D = COMPRESSION DISTANCE)*

assuming D = 0.015 mm

*E = 1200 • 0.015*

***E = 18 Joules***

***This is low in total energy but extremely concentrated over small tooth contact areas.***

**(Below AVG human level)**

As salvator merianae does not only hold, but shake and deathroll while biting, we also need to scale from athat

# 3- Shake Bite Scaling

Assuming lateral displacement:

 *D = 0.10 m*

*E = 1200 • 0,10*

***E = 120 joules***

**(AVG human level)**

# 4- Death roll Bite Scaling

Assuming effective rotational displacement:

*D = 0,20*

*E = 1200 • 0,10*

***E = 240 joules***

Now applying rotational torque amplification:

• 1.5

***240 • 1.5 = 360 joules***

***(Athlete level)***

# 4- Comparative Interpretation

The data suggest:

\-unusually high bite efficiency for body size

high cranial resistance to compressive strain

\- strong rotational leverage capacity

\- high robustness compared to similarly sized reptiles and many mammals

The species appears specialized toward:

\- crushing

\- resisting lateral force transmission

rather than purely cutting-based predation.

# 5. Important Notes

These are:

biomechanical estimates

not direct lethality measurements

Real combat outcomes depend on:

\-positioning

\-target anatomy

\-endurance

\-behavioral factors

\-accuracy of the bite placement
