Need to get this out of my chest, and I think only this sub will understand.

Self Improvement

There is a particular kind of grief that has no funeral. No date to mark, no people to gather, no socially accepted window to be sad inside of. It is the grief of something that almost was. Of a hand that reached back, but not quite far enough.

She came into my life the way most important people do - quietly, unremarkably, in the middle of an ordinary workday. I didn’t know then that I was meeting someone who would become the shape of a longing I had carried since childhood. I just knew that something in me recognized something in her.
And so I loved her. The way I always love - fully, carefully, with both hands. I remembered the small things. I showed up. I planned, and thought, and gave, and hoped. Not to be repaid. Just because that is the only way I know how to love someone.
But love, I have learned, is not just a feeling. It is also a direction. And ours only ever traveled one way.
She was not cruel. That is the part that makes it harder, somehow. Cruelty would have been easier to grieve. Instead she was warm when I was there, and absent when I wasn’t. Present enough to make me stay. Distant enough to remind me that I was always more alone in this than I wanted to believe.
I kept showing up. I told myself that love is patient, that people have their own pace, that I simply needed to wait a little longer. But waiting, after a while, stops being patience and starts being loss in slow motion.

So I left. Not in anger. Not with a door slam or a final cruel word. I left the way you blow out a candle , gently, deliberately, with full knowledge of what the dark will feel like after.
And then I grieved something I was never sure I had.
That is the strangest part of this kind of loss. There is no before and after. No clear line between having and not having. Just a quiet accumulation of moments where I gave more than was returned, until one day I looked up and realized I had been standing alone in something I thought was shared.
I don’t think she meant to take anything from me. I think she simply didn’t know what she had.
And I , I simply loved someone who couldn’t love me back in the language I needed. That’s all. No villain. No betrayal. Just two people, misaligned in the depth of what they were to each other.
I wanted her to look at me and say - you are my person, and I choose you.
She never did.

And I am learning, slowly, that the ache of that unspoken thing is allowed to be real. That grief doesn’t need a body to bury. That you can lose something you never fully had, and still be allowed to mourn it.

This is me, mourning it.
Not because I am broken. But because I loved sincerely. And sincerity, when it goes unanswered, deserves at least this - to be written down, witnessed, and gently released.
