What does it mean if someone who lives abroad has the Vietnamese national flag tattooed to their arm?
I'm from Germany. Since a couple of weeks, there is a new young female employee, apparently of Vietnamese decent, working at my local grocery store. I noticed, that she has the Vietnamese national flag tattooed on her right upper arm. There also some writing in addition to the flag, which I cannot read, because it's presumably in Vietnamese (she's a bit chubby, so there's extended space for tattoos on her arms). She speaks fluent German without accent, so I assume she grew up in Germany.
The flag tattoo made me wonder, because if a German person would display a tattoo of the German national flag, people here would think that person is a right-wing extremist nationalist and it would have significant implications with regard to how people would interact with that person.
So I would like to ask, is having a tattoo of the Vietnamese national flag a normal thing in Vietnam, or is there perhaps a nationalist movement that's popular amongst young ethnic Vietnamese who are living abroad? Or is it just that individual young lady, who for some reason identifies very strongly with her ethnic roots?
