Is a 1-Year MBA Worth It at 31 for Someone in the Social Impact Sector?
I’m a 31F with ~9 years of experience in the social impact/development consulting space in India, currently earning around 18+ LPA. Over the years I’ve worked on high-ownership roles across stakeholder management, strategy, and program work, and I’m reasonably well placed within my sector.
I wanted to do an MBA in my career partly for the brand/network and partly because I feel it will open doors beyond the sector I’m currently in.
A few things I’m clear about:
- I only want to do a 1-year MBA
- I’m inclined towards leadership/strategy/general management roles long term
- I’m open to continuing in impact OR pivoting into broader consulting/corporate strategy roles
- International exposure and peer network matter to me as much as compensation
What I’m trying to understand is:
- Whether an MBA still makes strategic sense for someone with my profile at this stage
- Whether Indian 1-year MBAs would meaningfully help someone like me, or if abroad programs make more sense
- How social sector experience is viewed in MBA recruiting/placements
I’ve taken the GRE once (312) and am considering preparing again.
Would genuinely appreciate advice from people who pursued MBAs in their late 20s/early 30s, came from non-traditional backgrounds, or have seen how social impact professionals fare post-MBA.
