How many nights a week is reasonable for my roommate’s boyfriend to be over?
My (31F) roommate (33F) has her boyfriend (25M) in our apartment 7 days a week, and he sleeps here 5 nights a week. She thinks having two days without him sleeping here is reasonable enough and I’m not being fair—however he’s still here in the mornings and whenever they’re hanging out on the nights he’s not sleeping here.
I’m fucking exhausted. I work retail and run my own bridal makeup business, so my days are STACKED (got up at 5:30am yesterday to work a wedding until 1, then went to my retail job 3-9 for reference). He’s here Monday evening, Tuesday all day, Wednesday morning, Thursday all day, Friday all day, Saturday all day, and Sunday until 6 or 7pm. I genuinely do not get a break from this man. I don’t even see my own boyfriend that often—he drives home before bed every night that he’s here (3-4 days a week), or I go to his place. My boyfriend lives with his mom and is only a ten minute drive away, for context. Her boyfriend also lives with his mom and is only fifteen minutes away, but my roommate claims it isn’t easy to drive him home because he doesn’t have a license or car. He doesn’t have a job and doesn’t put any money towards any bills, food, or anything.
To me, we have a third roommate. He eats, sleeps, showers and calls all his friends all hours of the day when he’s here. I don’t feel comfortable around him because of a troubled past with the law, and I feel like that’s completely valid. I’ve asked her if we can have one day a week where he isn’t here AT ALL, and we’d “compromised” on Thursday.
However, she told me immediately after I told her I didn’t feel comfortable that her boyfriend’s mom told him my roommate can’t stay at their house on Thursdays, and we fought about it but I thought it was settled. I told her she wasn’t respecting the fact that sometimes I just need space without someone I don’t know/trust here 24/7. I explained to her that when he’s here, I feel like I’m still “on” for the day, and cannot unwind. I get a couple hours a day in the apartment by myself, and only when I’m getting ready for work.
This past Thursday, after said fight where I told her I was uncomfortable with someone not paying rent and being here 5 nights a week, she drove all the way down to where he lives to get dinner seeming like she was going to take him home, and came back with him. I haven’t said anything yet, but I desperately need out of this apartment if this is how I have to spend my days. I always have to be in my room with my door shut when he’s here because he’s so loud, and he’s always on the phone with someone about something.
My lease ends in July, and I have a form to end the lease, but her signature is required to let me out when it ends. I have to have the form signed and turned in by the end of this month or I’m stuck again, and I fear she may do something to keep me from being able to get out of the lease. I have decided that even if the boyfriend won’t be here 5 nights a week, I’ve already been disrespected. She also has barely chipped in for chores in the entire 28 days she and her boyfriend have known each other.
It’s co-dependency and extremely toxic—this man will sit there and tell her that his crazy ex is texting him from a new number again. Or that one of his crazy exes called the cops about him physically abusing her, but the boyfriend laughed when he said the cops showed up and the girl was hitting him. He smacks my roommate sexually in front of my boyfriend and I, and when I brought up that this was also something that bothered me and asked if they could not do it in front of me, my roommate rolled her eyes and said we just do relationships differently.
If she doesn’t sign the form, I can’t be released from the lease and will have to sign the new one. I’m worried she will do something to make it so I can’t leave.
