Questions as an Upcoming PostBac
Hi everyone! The NIH is currently starting my approval process, and I had a few questions for current/former postbacs.
I’m definitely planning to accept the position because my long-term goal is medical school, and I know this experience would be incredibly valuable. The only thing making me nervous is the financial side. Based on what I’ve seen online, the salary for a postbac with a master’s degree seems to be around $45–46k, which would be almost a $30k pay cut from my current teaching salary.
Right now my monthly bills are around $2600 total (rent, car, utilities, etc.), so I know I’ll probably need to move and lower expenses. My car payment alone is about $600/month, so I’m considering renegotiating or changing that situation too.
I wanted to ask:
Were you able to live comfortably on the NIH postbac salary in the Bethesda area?
Are there any reasonably affordable 1-bedroom apartments nearby? (Preferably with in-unit washer/dryer, but I know I may have to compromise.)
Are there particular areas nearby that are cheaper but still manageable for commuting to NIH?
Did anyone supplement their income with tutoring, weekend jobs, etc.?
I’m excited about the opportunity, but I’d be lying if I said the pay cut wasn’t scary. Any advice would really help. Thanks!
