Should I have bought my wife a gift for mother's Day?

Just had a conversation with my brother so I'm kinda posting this on his behalf.

My brother booked a nice restaurant for breakfast for his wife, himself and their two young kids. Kids gave their gifts to their mother which he helped them select and buy though they paid for the gifts themselves. He paid for the breakfast. His wife is upset that he didn't get her any gift.

Is he the asshole?
