Once again, anti-trans women in women's sports activists have their hair on fire over a [**teenage trans girl in California**](https://nypost.com/2026/05/09/us-news/trans-athlete-dominates-california-girls-track-meet/).

**A. B. Hernandez** competes in volleyball and track and field for Jurupa Valley High School. She has been continually harassed since she began competing, with protests following her every appearance and [**even being called out by the President of the United States**](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/05/california-ab-hernandez-trump-attacks).

Yet, the sixteen year-old has exhibited a maturity beyond her years in her handling of all the controversy. She hasn't let it affect her performance and she maintains a remarkably positive attitude through it all.

Hernandaz attributes the support of her mother as being a big help during this time. She talks about it all in this short video over on YouTube:

Familial support can lift up and even save the life of a young trans person. Not always, but often, if that support comes, it comes from the child's mother.

That may not be your experience, but for many trans people (like me), your mom may be your only ally in your family. If so, treasure that, and remember her today on Mother's Day.
