What is your opinion on whether or not Grunge is a genre?

I have heard it said many times that Grunge should not be considered a genre and that’s it was more of a scene or a movement instead.

The reasons I have heard:

-different grunge bands don’t actually sound very alike

-record labels were really pushing the term as it was good for advertising

-the visuals were arguably more significant than the sound

-even though bands didn’t consider themselves “grunge”

While these are definitely compelling arguments, I have trouble accepting them as they aren’t unique to grunge.

What are your thoughts?
