Why are tuning names arranged backwards?

Been learning guitar for a almost a year now just realized something...

If highest string is the 1st string/top string... and the lowest string is the 6th string/bottom, why are the tuning names reversed? EADGBe, DADGAD, etc.

Edit: Answers here were getting nowhere. Turns out the reason is because note names are written from Lowest to Highest Pitch, which is keeps it standard across all tunable instruments. Thanks AI.
