Recommendations for a very picky reader
So I have to preface this with the fact that I don't normally read much fiction, and I haven't really read romance since high school, when I read Twilight and some other book from Sophie Kinsella, both of which I hated. I mostly read non-fiction or literary stuff, and I love a well-constructed sentence and a careful choice of words.
Then Heated Rivalry came, and I ended up reading the book, and I was obsessed. Even if I wouldn't call the writing amazing, the plot more than makes up for it. I didn't like the first book in that series, but I enjoyed the rest, and I especially loved Time to Shine. After I finished all Rachel Reid, I was trying out some more MM Romance books, but so far they are confirming what I thought of them before I read Heated Rivalry - I found them cringey and shallow. I read To Catch a Firefly, and I just didn't find the characters to be believable as people, the autism representation was bordering on offensive, and the second half of the book is just 'oh, how I love you' packaged in different flowery inner monologues. I tried reading Him by Sarina Bowen, as it gets recommended often, too, but I couldn't get through more than a couple of chapters. The characters sound awful and cringy, the first woman introduced is apparently 'such a bitch', and I am also realizing I absolutely hate first-person POV stuff. Maybe it can be done well, but I don't have an example for that. Now I'm reading We Could Be So Good, and I will finish this one; at least it's in third person, and the writing doesn't make me want to gouge my eyes out. But it also doesn't grab me in any way that would make me want to read more books like this.
So any recommendations that will either be as heartwarming and sunny as Rachel Reid's books, or something well-written with some depth? Reading those books was such a joy, and I don't really want to go back to my belief that romance books just aren't for me.
(Btw I'm not trying to offend anyone who likes the books I mentioned - I know I have a limited taste in this genre and am quite picky)
