WASHINGTON (25News Now) - Gunshots, an explosion, and fire jolted a neighborhood in Washington early Mother’s Day morning, and later in the day, police announced a suspect was taken into custody after an officer-involved shooting.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., first responders rushed to what’s now called an active crime scene in the 900 block of Mallard Way, near Kingsbury Road.

Washington Police said a person inside the multi-unit building fired on officers. A Washington officer returned fire, while another officer from an assisting agency was said to have suffered minor injuries.

A release said officers evacuated people living nearby when the explosion occurred in the home where the suspect fired the shots.

The cause of the blast isn’t known, but all residents living in the building were displaced because of the fire damage.

Police said a Washington Fire Department ambulance took the suspect to OSF HealthCare St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. That person’s condition is not known.

A release from the Washington Police did not mention if anyone was hurt from the explosion and fire, although Mayor Lilija Stevens said apparently no one suffered life-threatening injuries.

Illinois State Police will investigate, following protocol for officer-involved shootings.

The Washington Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the fire’s cause.

The Peoria Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team assisted at the scene, but Washington Police said that does not necessarily mean there was an explosive device.
