Resource guarding help

My 18 month old dog has a problem resource guarding things he’s not supposed to have and high value treats, like bully sticks, lick balls, etc.. We had friends over today and my buddy dropped his Zyn container on the ground so my dog immediately went and got it. My buddy thinks the best approach is ripping it out of my dogs mouth while pinning him to the ground to control him. Everything I’ve seen online is that will make it worse so I yelled and said don’t do that to my dog we need to get a treat and “trade up” so he goes for the treat and not the Zyn container. Mt buddy says that’s just rewarding bad behavior. So who’s right in this situation?
