Has anyone reached out to profs for research in a topic you are NOT competent at?

My background is software engineering but I’ve recently found a group in the department that does research to bridge the gap between quantum physics and engineering. Needless to say I find it so cool. Most of the people in the group have a background in either EE or physics.

They say they’re looking for students but reading the type of research they do I genuinely can’t fathom how I could have any leg to stand on with my background.

Anyone been in their position (or the receiving end)? Should I be a bit more realistic in what kind of research I attempt to look for?
