Stuck in a loop: Should I stick to my "Training Project" or jump into my "Dream Project"?
Hi everyone,
I've been a fan of AVNs for a long time and recently started developing my own game using Koikatsu. I have a story that I truly believe in, but I didn’t want to ruin it with my technical amateurism. So, I made a plan:
I decided to create a "training project", a game where the story isn't the priority, but the main goal is to improve my rendering and coding skills. I’m not looking for financial gain with this one; I just want to learn and maybe build a small community. I’m almost finished with Episode 1. It consists of about 800 renders, 10 animations, and roughly 20,000 words. The coding is about halfway done.
THE PROBLEM:
Lately, I’ve lost all excitement for this project. While I enjoyed the process and definitely learned a lot (it’s much more efficient than just making random scenes in Studio), I now feel like deleting everything. The main reason is that I don’t like the story at all. Since I focused on technical improvement, I didn't put much effort into the narrative.
Now, one side of me says: "Go ahead and start the story you actually care about." But the other side warns me: "If you fail to translate your vision into the game due to technical limitations, you'll ruin a great story and lose all motivation. Stick to the plan, improve your skills first, then use your good story."
I feel stuck. Logic says "stick to the plan," but my heart isn't in it anymore. What do you think? Should I finish this training project to build a foundation, or should I scrap it and start fresh with the story I love?
