Tesla Model Y Standard vs Toyota Prius PHEV, Which Makes More Sense Financially in Canada?
I’m trying to decide between a Tesla Model Y Standard and a Toyota Prius PHEV, and I’m honestly stuck. I’ve been driving for over 6 years, and the main reason I’m buying a car is to actually drive more without getting destroyed by gas prices. I already ruled out the Tesla Model Y Premium because it’s about $22k more expensive than the Standard version, and the insurance quote was also around $200 more per month than Standard version. The Prius insurance quote is around $300/month. I’m also planning to keep this car for at least 10 years, so long-term ownership costs matter a lot to me.
What I’m trying to figure out is which option makes more sense financially over the long term. I like the idea of going fully electric with the Tesla, but I’m worried about winter range loss in Canada, depreciation, charging convenience, and long-term repair costs. At the same time, the Prius PHEV feels like the safer and more practical choice, but I’m wondering if I’d regret not going full EV later. For people who’ve owned either car, which one would you choose today and why?
