AIO to my friends hating on a celebrity’s Met Gala look?
For anyone who doesn’t know, this past Monday was the Met Gala, which is a huge fashion event that celebrities attend, and the outfits are always insane. A celebrity who I’m really really obsessed with (and all my friends know how much I like them) was in attendance.
When I saw a picture of their Met Gala look, I was super excited and ran to tell my friend “Maya” (fake name) about it. Maya made a face and was clearly about to say something negative, so I cut her off and said, If you don’t like it, I don’t want to hear it right now. Maybe that was harsh, but I just wanted one night to enjoy something I liked without hearing negative comments, so I went back to my room to look at pictures by myself. After that night, I was happy to talk to Maya and my other friends about what they disliked about the look.
It happened a couple more times, though, where someone would bring up this celebrity’s look, I would say I liked it, and Maya (sometimes with others) would immediately jump in saying it was so bad and naming all the things she thought were bad about it. The last time, I said I’d appreciate if they’d stop piling on about it. Maya responded, “You’re not gonna change my mind,” and I said I knew that, but it hurt my feelings when people were constantly hating on something I liked. Maya also insinuated that I only liked the look because I’m “in love with them” and therefore my opinion isn’t valid.
AIO for asking Maya and the others to stop? I feel silly for caring, but it’s really not about the celebrity. It just feels mean for someone to constantly shit talk something they know I like the second it comes up.
ETA: I didn't realize I had to clarify this, but I know it's not personal! I know someone not liking a celebrity's outfit has nothing to do with me personally. I'm not taking it as a personal attack.
