Recurring Sensory Issues in Right Big Toe (Seeking Similar Experiences)

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share a strange chronic issue I’ve been dealing with since around September 2023. It mainly affects my right big toe. I know this is a bit off-topic here since my pain wasn’t caused by an injury, but I’m just tired and want to share what I’m dealing with.

Background: I’m 18 years old and in decent physical shape. I smoke weed on and off.

Symptoms:
• Recurring pain in the right big toe (sometimes sharp, sometimes burning/pressure-like sensations).
• Cyclical pattern: periods of remission lasting weeks to months, followed by flare-ups.
• During flares, the sensation can appear suddenly, build in intensity over several days, and then plateau until the next remission cycle begins.
• Sensory hypersensitivity in the area (sometimes light touch or pressure can create lingering or “echo-like” sensations).
• Occasionally feels like “overwhelming sensory input” in the toe; sometimes it’s driving me crazy to the point where I want to cut that toe the fuck off.
• In remission periods, symptoms can be completely gone for weeks.

What I’ve noticed:
• Movement and walking often distract from the pain.
• Heat (hot baths) reduces symptoms slightly.
• In calm/rest states, symptoms become much more noticeable and overwhelming.
• Stress doesn’t seem to have a clear correlation.
• Cannabis does not reliably affect the pain.

• Psilocybin usage: Over the last 7 months, I’ve consumed about 8g of psilocybin mushrooms in total. This included microdosing courses and a few trips of 1.5–2g.
• During the first 3 months of this period, the pain returned occasionally but was much weaker and passed quickly.
• For the following 4 months, I was in complete remission. During this time, I barely used them (only 0.5g once and 1g once, with a long break in between).

Medical background:
• Multiple basic exams (X-ray/ultrasound) were inconclusive; blood/urine tests were clear.
• One doctor suggested early possible arthritis in my heel; another said everything is normal. Preventive ultrasound and magnetic therapy didn’t help at all.
• No clear diagnosis so far.
• Neurological testing (EMG/MRI) was suggested but not completed due to insurance limitations.

Current situation:
Right now, I’m in another flare after that 4-month remission (my longest yet). Symptoms started 3 days ago and are progressing.

I’m not looking for a diagnosis, just trying to find similar experiences or ideas on where to look next. If anyone has gone through something similar, I’d really like to hear your story.
