Hit and Run CALIFORNIA

So a few weeks ago my friend was driving to work and in the parking lot, hit a large truck. The truck didn't seem to have much damage and they were late to work. My friends headlight was damaged. Partially out of panic and fear, they left the scene and nothing happened until the cops showed up at their house today. The cop basically just kept saying that they committed a hit and run which is a misdemeanor. My friend basically confessed and gave the cops all the details of the accident but didn't tell the cop the circumstance (being late for work and what not). My friend is just waiting for the full police report and is really concerned if theyll get jail time . They contacted their insurance about it tho. The cop didn't really explain what would happen and just gave a card. My friend feels horrible. Should they get a lawyer? What should they be expecting? This is their first misdemeanor/offense (never gotten a ticket).
