Additional Bag at Airport

My family and I are travelling from London Heathrow to Miami. We have economy tickets which come with one cabin bag each. Can I turn up at the airport with one additional bag to check in and simply pay at the desk? When I try to add bags online I can only add an extra bags for all of us - I don’t need five extra, just one!
