Advice on situation with Insurance Company and cleaning company. (WA State)
To start I was laid off in Dec ‘24 and haven’t been able to get reemployed. In Oct ‘25 my apartment caught fire due to an old space heater. I have renters insurance with $30000 to cover my loses. The whole one bedroom was destroyed. I have never been through anything like this and really didn’t know what I was doing. I was instructed to call ServPro and start there. SevPro told me to call a cleaning company in my area to deal with my personal things. I called them and they came and packed out the things we wanted to keep. They then returned to remove all of the destroyed items. At the start I was given an advance on my policy for $5000 to help get needed essentials replaced. Before discussing cleaning they required being paid $15000 by the insurance company. At the time my insurance asked what the cleaning estimate was, the reply was ‘a few thousand.’ The agent also mentioned in the call that I was getting close to my insurance policy limit.
Now this is where it gets complicated. The cleaning company says this discussion with the insurance agent without me was the negotiation for the cleaning. My insurance agent claims he did no such thing and only I can negotiate. I was never talked to about this. The only thing I received was a bill from the insurance agent that the cleaning bill total was now $10000($9800). I had been anticipating ‘a few thousand’ and $10000 is more than I can cover. Because of this bill my policy was maxed. I had been saving receipts for months to recoup expenses for replacing my life but had to eat all of it because the cleaning bill is $10000. The insurance agent says they never negotiated on my behalf and also refuse to push back on what had been discussed of being’a few thousand.’ The cleaning company says the insurance agent did negotiate and has never pushed back on the amount so that is what i am stuck with. The cleaning company did admit that they failed to get back to the insurance agent once they knew it would be over ‘a few thousand’ but that it didn’t matter now. I got a call from the cleaning company manager and he discussed what could help resolve this. (At the time of this conversation I was mistaken on the amount owed. I thought my amount was $8900 and not $9800.) so I agreed to pay $4500 to get this resolved. The manager said he would talk to the owner and the owner would respond. I received nothing for almost two weeks. However since I have been getting the full bill amount sent to my inbox every Monday and Friday since. I believe I have their answer. Last Wednesday the manager of the insurance agent called me and we discussed the situation. I laid it all out. She agreed to have the insurance agent write an email to the cleaning company and declare they never negotiated on my behalf. I also asked them to please push back on the total being asked. She seemed quite hesitant but insisted they would send something out. I had hoped by Friday EOD I would have seen their email. But nothing yet. I totally agree I need to pay for cleaning, but $10000 is too much! They also went way above what was expected. They apparently hand polished the goodwill class ware, individually wrapped socks, and also horribly handled delicate and rare linens. I also don’t have an income. I am now living with my parents helping my mom take care of my dad with Parkinson’s. If I at least was making some money I wouldn’t be as stressed, but I simply don’t have it. Please ask any questions to get clarity or insight. I greatly appreciate anyone that read this far. What advice if any does anyone have? TY
