What is the psychology behind defending someone that abused you?

I find it fascinating that the Casio’s, Wade, James, etc etc defended the man when the allegations started to surface for both Jordan and Gavin, all while they were also current or past victims. They knew what was going on, and that it was the same thing happening to them.

Why? Did they not want to be shamed in the public? Were they scared to face the truth? Did they believe Michael truly loved them and wasn’t doing them harm?

This is also why I believe he abused Macaulay.. imagine the damage to his career if he came out with the truth.
