Advice on meetup and friendships

I just want to know how can we make new friends so that the friendship lasts longer? Do we have to look for specific age group? Like minded people? Or if we have to keep looking until we find such friends? Or there should be something common in us so that we can keep meeting for that cause and grow in life? I would like to know your opinion on this.
