I love Le Cercle Rouge and have a practical question about a plot device

I’ve watched Le Cercle Rouge countless times over the past twenty years. I love so many things about it, but is it realistic that a police higher up personally escorts a criminal in a sleeper train ridden by the general public, à la Matthei and Vogel? was this a common practice in France circa 1970, and anywhere else?
