Offered new role afraid I might mess it up should I take it?

Offered a role completely outside of my skill set - it’s a promotion. I’m afraid because I don’t have the skill I will suck at it and disappoint my sponsor and worse get PIPed.

Not accepting promotions is a career killer… but isn’t bad performance equally a career killer? What would you do to manage situation?

If I stay in my current job I will not get a new role for some time… I can tell I’ve become the “reliable” manager to my reporting line… nobody talks about my career with me when I ask… I assume they don’t want to disrupt the department’s success.

The new role is a different unit different stakeholders so they are okay “disrupting” as they don’t have ties to existing department.
