HOA Board Members.. How did you end up participating/joining in a universally hated community?

As the title suggests, im curious how you ended up on an HOA, knowing what people think of them. Is it like politics where you go in with great intent only to get twisted in to the dirty side of it? Im sure nobody grows up thinking: I want to judge how long my neighbors lawn is and fine them if its out of compliance
