Ubuntu 26.04 stuck on boot/logo - AMD GPU failure? Only works with nomodeset & video=SVIDEO-1:d
Hi everyone, I'm struggling with an HP laptop running the latest Ubuntu The issue: The laptop hangs indefinitely on the HP/Ubuntu logo during boot. Before switching to Linux, Windows 10 would boot but instantly crash into a solid blue screen (no text, just color) as soon as any video or hardware acceleration was triggered. What I've done so far: I can only boot into the desktop using nomodeset. Even with nomodeset, it was hanging on the logo until I added video=SVIDEO-1:d to the GRUB command line. Once booted, performance is extremely poor (software rendering, obviously). I’m getting about 13-30 FPS in simple tasks/games like osu! because the CPU is doing all the work. Hardware/Specs: Laptop: HP CPU/GPU:amd ryzen 5 3500u apu vega 8 OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS It looks like a hardware failure of the AMD GPU block, but I'm looking for a way to maybe "partially" enable some drivers or bypass the specific faulty instruction that causes the hang. Is there any way to get even basic hardware acceleration without triggering the "blue screen of death" / total system hang? Or am I stuck with software rendering forever? Thanks in advance!
