LAX birding spots

Hello! I have a 15 hr layover in LAX from 6AM - 7PM (landing and departure). This gives me bit less than 9 hrs in Los Angeles even with the 3 hour buffers. Coming from Australia (where we are blessed for coasts), I'm not too keen on beaches, but I am keen on birds!

I was looking at making a trip to Ballona Wetlands but have heard mixed reviews on its safety? I'd be completely on foot with only a bag. Would the area be safe during the day time? And if not I was wondering if there was any other nature-based suggestions somewhat close by. Thanks :)
