22 Years and a Tired Heart

Confession

I’m 22m and I wrote this after spending a long time dealing with heartbreak, loneliness, and trying to figure myself out again. I usually keep everything to myself, but lately I’ve been realizing how much damage holding everything in has done to me, so I wanted to finally put some of my thoughts into words.

I feel lonely even when I know I’m loved.

I feel depressed even when all I really want is happiness. Sometimes I look at myself and feel worthless even though deep down I know I’m worth more than the pain I carry around every day.

I gave my heart to someone who never held it the same way I held theirs. To them I was replaceable, someone easy to forget and easy to leave behind. While I remembered every little thing about them, I was probably just a temporary part of their story.

The hardest part is knowing my love was genuine. I loved with loyalty, patience, honesty, and effort, but somehow it still wasn’t enough to make someone stay. Pain like that changes a person. It makes you question your value and whether you’re even capable of being loved the right way.

Some nights I sit alone replaying memories that probably meant more to me than they ever did to them. I still wonder how someone can become a stranger while somehow still living in your mind every single day.

Even after everything, a part of me still wants to believe in love. I still want to believe I’ll eventually be chosen the same way I choose other people. But honestly, I’m exhausted from carrying emotions nobody else can really see.

I smile around people while fighting things inside myself nobody notices. I tell myself I’m strong, but strength starts feeling meaningless when your heart constantly feels abandoned.

Maybe that’s what hurts the most. Not losing them, but losing parts of myself trying to hold onto someone who was already letting go.

Sometimes I just want to give up.

I feel like every time I try helping people or trying to do good, all I get back is pain and disappointment. I want people to feel loved and happy, but the truth is I can’t even seem to help myself anymore.

So why do I keep trying?

Why do I wake up feeling like I’m just in everybody’s way? Why does it feel like no matter how much love I give, I never get it back the same way? Why do people take pieces of me to heal themselves, then leave me behind like I wasn’t broken too?

Why is it always me?

Why do I always fall for people I already know probably won’t love me the way I love them? Is it because I’m lonely? Desperate? Or have I gotten so used to pain that I confuse it with love now?

Maybe that’s the part that scares me the most.

People saying they care about me when they don’t really mean it. People making promises they never planned on keeping. Being important to someone only when it benefits them, then forgotten once they don’t need me anymore.

None of it really makes sense to me.

I know I can’t be the only person in the world who feels this emotionally exhausted. All I’ve ever wanted was somebody to love me for who I actually am, not for what I can do for them, but because they genuinely see me and choose me anyway.

I don’t even want perfect love.

Honestly, I just dream about simple things. Sitting in a coffee shop talking for hours. Walking through bookstores together. Going on late-night walks or hikes just to look at the stars and escape everything for a little while.

I’ve never cared much about parties or fancy places. That life never really felt like me. But there are still crowded places I love, like the beach during sunset, amusement parks at night, carnivals with lights and music, arcades, bowling alleys, or movie theaters. Although honestly, drive-ins always felt more personal to me somehow.

I think I just want moments that feel real.

Real love, real connection, real peace.

But after everything I’ve been through, I still sit alone sometimes with the same thought repeating in my head:

What if I’m just not good enough to be loved the way I love other people?

I loved her so deeply that I abandoned the path God had for me, only to lose both her and myself in the process.

And while losing myself, I lost everything else too.

My peace. The roof over my head. People I once saw as family.

Now it feels like I’m stuck going in circles with no real end in sight. Some days I still ask myself if any of it was even worth it.

Even now, while I’m slowly rebuilding myself piece by piece, I still can’t shake the feeling that maybe I’m walking the wrong path.

At the same time though, I know I’m doing better than I used to, or at least I think I am.

The people around me say they see growth in me. They say I’m stronger than the person I was a year or two ago. Maybe they see healing in me before I’m able to fully see it myself.

So now I’m trying to give myself back to God and trust that He’ll guide me toward the path He actually has for me.

I know I’m not perfect. I know I’m a sinner. But I still pray for forgiveness and ask God to help me become the man I’m supposed to be.
