Did Isaac Cline ever acknowledge that history proved his outspoken theory about it not being possible for a hurricane to do extensive damage to Galveston wrong because it happened several times before?
Let me preface by saying I feel very well read on this topic.
Erik Larson dives deeply into Isaac Cline and the early weather bureau. Having just finished my 3rd read thru and watching the documentary right after this week and then doing as much side reading as possible something struck me.
I can find nothing about Isaac Cline acknowledging known storms having hit Galveston or surrounding areas. It seems thru all of the written history that Cline had a Titanic approach to Galveston when it came to major hurricanes despite past evidence to the contrary.
I think I know why it wasn’t acknowledged at the time as that could have been damaging to Galveston as a city but my question is this:
Did he or anyone at the weather bureau ever acknowledge that the history of the area did not warrant Isaac’s very outspoken view that a major storm couldn’t hit Galveston? Did anyone else hold him accountable in contemporary times? It feels like Larson was the first to put blame on him 100 years later.
