Most Western media frames the Sahel as just another “terrorism” hotspot. They’re missing the actual story: We are witnessing the violent birth of a new multipolar order.

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger aren’t just having “coups”, they are systematically unplugging from a structural cage designed in 1958.

The Key Nuances:

• The 1958 Trap: The French “Community” referendum wasn’t independence; it was a transition to indirect control via the CFA Franc.

• Beyond Uranium: While headlines scream about nuclear fuel, the real battle is over gold and monetary sovereignty. The CFA Franc has allowed decades of capital flight while capping local industrialization.

• The Ukraine-Sahel Axis: In a wild 2026 twist, the Sahel is now a secondary front of the Russo-Ukrainian war. With Ukrainian GUR admitting to assisting rebels at Tinzaouaten, the AES (Alliance of Sahel States) sees Kyiv as a “proxy of a proxy” for NATO/French interests.

• The “Controlled Chaos” Strategy: There is a growing belief in Bamako that the West is willing to tolerate jihadist expansion if it sabotages the AES’s pivot toward Russia and China.

The era of “Francafrique” is dead. The question is: Will the high-stakes gamble for raw sovereignty lead to true independence or a “Syrian scenario” of permanent fragmentation?
