Corpse sickness

how does corpse sickness work? I'm a new player playing on build 42, I'm enjoying the game so much. But, my only 2 characters to make it past a week have both died of corpse sickness. I'm doing my best to avoid being in a bad smelling area as much as i can, and I'm avoiding big piles where possible as well. what am i doing wrong here?
