Renaming of on-premise AD domain

I have to rename an on-premise AD domain, and online everyone seems to say "create new domain, trust, migrate", only I don't think this can be done without spare DC servers?

We have 2 DC's w the existing domain, client wants it renamed since some smart guy gave it the same name as a separate domain they have.

How would I go about this without needing extra DC servers?
