Postcard notifications

If I send a postcard to someone and they hit "discard", does my Pikmin instantly return to me? Additionally, will I not receive a notification that they received it/ the postcard made it to them? Normally I get a notification that it made it to my friends, but I have one friend who the app never generates a notification for, so I keep feeling like they hit discard?
