Today I learned I’ve been singing wrong all my life

Conversation Topic

Hobby Guitarist here who’s always struggled with singing, for years and years I was just told I was a bad singer, I just wasn’t born with it and for the most part I’ve accepted that. Then one day someone listened to me sing and told me im trying to be a tenor when you’re really a bass. I had no idea what that meant, he pulled up Johnny Cashes “Hurt” and told me to sing along and copy him. And just like that for once in my life I felt I could sing. I had no idea about vocal ranges and stuff like that.

Now I’m wondering, I naturally gravitate towards tenor songs, can I just take those songs and overlay with a bass vocal? Will it sound off in standard tuning? I really dislike tuning down but i admit it does sound much better. How can I develop the bass vocal better?

Sorry if I seem uneducated, I am still learning the basics here! But I’m super pumped that I’ve uncovered this new world of secrets.
