An Unlikely Synergy?
So these are a lot of thoughts that are potentially more connected than they seem at first.
Guild Wars Reforged is showing a commitment to an older game / system in the wider Guild Wars franchise. Ever since they announced it the GW2 social and media platforms just use an updated “Guild Wars” logo. This could serve at the least as a way of showing that GW2 won’t be dead if/when they announce and launch GW3.
Well, Darens MMO recently brought up a compelling theory: NC recently trademarked the term Mistbound. Darens posited the theory it could be similar in concept to soulbound or account bound, but in a hall of monuments way connecting GW2 to potentially GW3 an even possibly back to GW1. What if this is all connected to the Lion’s Arch card game too, he posited? Guild Wars the franchise becomes interconnected with the Mistbound system that lets you unlock items and gear for all 3 games and the card game has connections to that as well - both ways.
Here is my unique take on this idea: the fiery dragon sword. Iconic. The new logo for Reforged features it prominently. GW2 has Sohothin with its “poster child” Rytlock. There is even a loose plot thread of another sword, Magdaer, that has been hanging since the core game’s launch.
GW2: Visions of Eternity has one more legendary weapon that will release in about 3 months. We have already gotten a spear/staff combination (which Anet said counts as 2 of the 3 legendary weapons of this expansion), and what weapon would be most likely to be the next legendary? Sword. Sword is usable by all 9 professions, just like spear.
Rytlock is with us. Any chance we could inherit Sohothin if something happens to him? Or finally finish the Magdaer thread that was dropped after Eir got the broken sword back in the base game 14 years ago? This would be giving players the iconic fiery dragon sword of Prince Rurik himself (or King Adelbern if we crafted Magdaer). It would add weight to the story if something happened to Rytlock.
And, what if it connects to GW3 via the “Mistbound” system? To get your fiery dragon sword in GW3 you need to actively play GW2 and unlock the legendary sword.
Now, timing… ArenaNet said that GW Reforged is launching in summer. Visions of Eternity wraps up in late August (technically summer). Gamescon and the anniversary of GW2 happen in August. What if they announce the wider Guild Wars ecosystem as a whole in August, announcing the card game and GW3, launch GW1 mobile with a renewed impact on GW2 and GW3, and maybe even a final/new GW2 expansion? Could be a mighty powerful moment. Imagine the fiery dragon sword across all three games - would be an incredible cinematic trailer for the GW trilogy of online games.
Now is this likely? Probably not, but I think it would be incredible. Thoughts?
