Was I alone in thinking MK1 was a remake of the 90s games?

Lemme preface by saying I turned 40 in December and was an og player of Mortal Kombat in the early 90s. I was a bit too young for the arcade but I remember owning MK2 on SNES and seeing the 95 movie in theaters with my parents who also bought me the action figures and subsequently UMK3 later etc.

I recently got back into gaming as I lost interest around the time PS2 came out. Ive had a PS5 for just over a year now and I can say by now ive finally good enough to be a decent player in most types of games...

With all that said, when I first heard about Mortal Kombat 1 being a thing, I honestly thought they did the most awesome thing they could've... took the original MK storyline (or MK - UMK3 aka MK Klassic) and kept everything mostly the same, except with modern graphics, inputs, etc.

While I dont hate what happened with the MK1 storyline (it was one of the 1st games I bought with my new ps5 last year), i seriously thought by looking at the title that they did just that; updated the original games and just updated it with modern graphics, inputs etc. I was sooo looking fwd to seeing the original storyline play out and looking the best possible way it could've. Original costumes/skins, updated og music (maybe with techno syndrome included), updated gameplay, etc.

Idk if this has been discussed 1000x over but did anyone else expect MK1 to be basically a remake/remaster of the original Mortal Kombat story line?!?! I guess they refer to it as MK Klassic now but onggg bro i really truly thought they updated the originals. I cant be the only one who thought that's what MK1 was at first glance.

And how much of a missed opportunity is this?! Idc what they gotta do. It'd be such a cool thing to see all the og arenas, characters/skins, storyline, etc from the 1st mk trilogy but updated for modern gaming. If they aren't already working on it, they need to start.

They could still do the storyline of Liu Kang as the God of fire and his new era as the continuity they want but a also have a completely seperate game with the Klassic stuff. HIw fuckin dope would it be if they did that?!?!

TLDR why wasnt "MK1" a remake/remaster of the og MK Klassic games? Huge missed opportunity imo.
