Do you think straight ships/pairings are only liked now if they go against the norm?
BEFORE YOU SAY IT: No this is NOT a case of "The oppresser feeling like equality is them being oppressed", or me crying out "straight erasure".
I understand for a long time heterosexuality has been the most shown form of relationship in media/fiction for YEARS. Nowadays we're starting to that trend break a bit and have a bit more diversity in the sexuality of characters and thats great.
However something I have noticed however though is that Nowadays a straight pairing doesnt get much love or acknowledgement, unless the relationship doesnt fit the norm. What do I mean by this, well the best way I can put it is Flipped societal perceived Gender Roles. This tends to show a couple or ship presenting a very submissive or passive male, whilst on the other hand having a dominant or outgoing female.
Examples:
1. Clark and Lois in My Adventures With Superman:
The appeal for this I get; Clark while still being his tall and muscular self, is made more charmingly awkward, shy, and Socially Clumsy then we've usually seen him portrayed before. Meanwhile Lois is made more tomboyish, go getting, feisty, and tenacious than we're used to seeing her.
2. Rogue and Gambit:
Gambits never been portrayed as a submissive or passive kinda dude, but people recently have loved the idea that Rogue is the one the relationship who carries him around, or that he is the little spoon. Especially due to the recent representation in Marvel Rivals.
3. Choso and Yuki from Jujutsu Kaisen:
A ship that got popular due to the characters closeness in the culling games arc. But one of the biggest attractions I see to this ship tend to be the height difference (Choso being 5'9-5'8 and Yuki being 5'11- 6'0) leading to people to play with the idea of their relationship having flipped gender dynamics.
4. Okarun and Momo from Dandadan:
Momo is confident, assertive, and loyal, while Okarun is shy, dorky, and highly intelligent, with their bond growing through mutual acceptance of their hidden "weirdness".
These are just the ones that come to mind at the current moment, but if you take any pairing involving a tall woman its usually like this. Nothing wrong with this at all by the way, I have recently myself become an advocate of tall, dominant women. And I understand the appeal of heterosexual relationships opposing the current patriarchal norms, My favorite relationship in fiction is Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase. Their the perfect representation of Gender equality in a relationship to me
.
However, I can't help but feel as though people are starting to write off straight relationships that don't appear to conform to the ideas as the ones above. Now obviously alot of straight norm/ regular boy and girl relationships have issues, and I for one do understand the fatigue of submissive female with dominant male (trust me I'm getting it too). But that doesnt mean there aren't some good ones every now and then. Ichigo and Orihime, Reed Richards and Sue Storm, Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy.
I am 5'11 170lb athletic built African American Male, from.the description of my appearance most would think of something dominant. However I wouldnt label myself as that. I wouldnt say I'm submissive either. I'd say I'm just someone who would want the woman of my choice to be someone who can rely on me to take lead sometimes, and I can rely on her to take lead sometimes.
I don't think I could feel comfortable being completely submissive, and maybe thats still a bit of the patriarchy in me, but I do understand why ships or relationships that portray that or something similar is being more favored.
