Can 2 bonded cats share a carrier when moving so they recognize each other's scent at the new place?

General

I have two adult female cats, littermates, who I adopted when they were young kittens. Usually they are best friends and get along as you would expect sister cats to--cuddling, playing, etc. They never fight.

HOWEVER, when I move or have to bring them to the vet, upon getting home/arriving at the new place, one of the cats doesn't recognize the smell of the other, and this causes them to hiss and bat at each other for about 48 hours. They don't avoid each other unfortunately because they both want to be close to me, so it is very stressful. I have had them in separate carriers for vet visits and moves ever since they were too big to share one, and this is when the problem started.

In my last couple moves I did succesfully help them transition more smoothly by using the trick of rubbing them with an old t-shirt with their scents on it. Since it wears off though, I found it's best to have multiple shirts to refresh the smell for a while until they acclimate. (Before moving, I rub down each with multiple t-shirts or towels to get their scent on it, and put the cloths into individual plastic bags marked with the cat's name to preserve the scent.) This almost completely solves the problem.

Current dilemma: I am moving again soon and this time there will be movers arriving at the new place at the same time as us. I want to quarantine the cats to a bathroom when we first arrive so that the movers can finish their job. I don't know that my old t-shirt trick will work well enough in this situation, and I don't know that I could stay in the room with them to monitor them. I could theoretically separate the cats in two different rooms, but it would be much harder to set up since it is a small apartment, and I imagine the cats will be very scared if they are alone in a room in a new place with the noise of the movers.

My question: Do you think if I transported the cats in one, extra large carrier it would eliminate the problem of the one not recognizing the other?

My thought is they can comfort each other instead. Is this too risky? Has anyone in a similar situation tried this before? I guess my fear is maybe they would fight in the carrier, though I think that outcome is unlikely if they are together the entire time. The trip is about 50 minutes.
